General Facilities

Practice Opportunities

The normal facilities of the Gawler Airfield are available at all times for practice for the world championship competitions. Modern sailplanes are available for hire. Other gliding clubs situated within the contest area will also provide facilities and opportunities for training.

Details of member clubs of the South Australian Gliding Association are available from their web site at www.aus-soaring.on.net/saga

Media Capability

Gliding competitions have not enjoyed extensive media publicity in recent years. The Organising Committee for these Championships is committed to changing this situation. The proximity of Gawler to Adelaide gives it an advantage in terms of media coverage. Adelaide has five TV stations, all with outside broadcast capability. Limited television coverage has been provided of past national gliding championships conducted at Gawler. The Adelaide print media and its radio stations will also provide coverage of the event.

Pre-Publicity

The GFA is conscious of the information requirements of pilots and crews planning to attend a World Gliding Championship. The GFA therefore undertakes to produce regular bulletins about the event. These bulletins will be distributed internationally in hard copy format and through the Internet. An Email facility will also be established for the event.
During the Championships progressive competition results will be made available through the internet, through this page and to the newsgroups.

Transport at the Event

During the 2001 Worlds - Some transport will be available for competitors without their own transport, between the airfield and the town of Gawler and the railway station, for travel to Adelaide.

Language Services and Cultural Affiliations

People from some 85 different ethnic groupings reside in Adelaide. These ethnic groups have expressed their support for the staging of the Championships at Gawler and have offered the services of a liaison officer for each team. The liaison officers will provide translation services for non-English speaking competitors as well as their crew and will ensure there is ample social interaction between visiting teams and their respective ethnic organisations.

Medical

High standard medical services are available within the township of Gawler. Treatment for serious conditions will be available from one of the many major hospitals located in Adelaide, some 45 minutes travelling time from the Airfield. Adelaide is internationally recognised for its teaching hospitals and advanced sports medicine centres. A first aid centre will be provided in the International Village at the Airfield.

Banking

All normal banking facilities, including currency exchange are available in the town of Gawler. Charge cards such as Visa, Mastercard and American Express are widely used in Australia, and facilities for their use exist on the airfield. A banking service will also be provided in the International Village.

Tugs

To ensure rapid launching, the Organising Committee will provide a minimum of 10 glider tugs during the Championships. Naturally, all tug pilots will be well experienced.

Hire of gliders during event

The Organising Committee for these Championships will endeavour to meet all requests for the hiring of suitable gliders for the event. The Committee will ensure the brokerage of fair and reasonable hire rates for such gliders.
If you are looking to hire or have gliders available to hire then please contact Daryl Connell or Reg Moore.
