Adelaide provides excellent facilities for tourists, including several world class hotels and many fine restaurants. Adelaide also has a shipping container terminal, which will be of substantial assistance to pilots planning to transport their own gliders to the Championships.
Gazetted as a town in 1839, Gawler was the first regional town to be created in South Australia. It is now seen as the gateway to one of South Australia's premier tourist regions, the Barossa Valley. As one of the most important wine producing areas in Australia, the Barossa Valley includes many other tourist facilities and attractions, including country-style accommodation, hot air ballooning and the local history associated with the German migrants who first settled the area.
The Gawler
region offers a range of accommodation options for pilots, crews and visitors
to these Championships.
Specific Arrangements
A large budget price motel (103 rooms) is situated less than 2 km from the Gawler Airfield. A second motel of similar size has been constructed in the Gawler township.
In the nearby township of Elizabeth (14 km from the airfield), there are two hotels and two motels with a total of 49 units.
Lyndoch, a tourist township in the Barossa Valley (13 km from the airfield) has another motel with 34 units, whilst Nuriootpa and Tanunda, two other Barossa townships, offer 8 motels and hotels totalling 180 units. These townships are approximately 40 km from the airfield.
Two Wells, a small township less than 25 km from the airfield, has one motel with 10 units.
Further accommodation may of course be found in Adelaide. As mentioned there is a large range of hotels, motels, guest houses, backpacker establishments, bed and breakfast places and caravan parks ranging from budget to 5-star accommodation.
Guest Houses
There are a number of guest houses situated in the Barossa Valley, ranging from 13 km to 40 km from the airfield. The standard of this style of accommodation is very high, but economical by international standards. Private homes may also be available for rent to glider pilots and crews.
Caravan and Camping Sites
Gawler offers camping accommodation in the form of two caravan parks providing 200 sites. On-site caravans and cabins are available. Two additional caravan parks are located within 18 km of Gawler, providing 126 sites and eight cabins. In the Barossa Valley, approximately 38-40 km from Gawler, there are caravan parks providing approximately 600 sites and 28 cabins and on-site vans. Powered sites for camping are also available in these parks.
A limited number of camp sites will be available on the Gawler Airfield.
Accommodation in University Halls
A major campus of the University of Adelaide, Roseworthy College, is situated 8 minutes travelling time from the airfield. The Campus Halls of Residence will be available for pilots and their crew.
Other Accommodation
Youth hostels are located in various parts of the Adelaide Hills, within 40 km of Gawler. A new hostel is currently being built at Sandy Creek, 6 km from Gawler.
