The Pilots
Richard Hood
Glider Repairer, age 25.
Flight log: 9 yrs, 800 hrs
Championships - Winner UK Club Class Nationals 1999 & 2000
To Richard gliding is all about the freedom to explore the sky and to pit himself
against the elements. He loves the thrill and challenge of competition and the great
feeling that a successful day brings.
He likes the freedom that gliding gives to explore the sky; doesn’t like too many
regulations.
Peter Masson
IT manager, age 25.
Flight log: 9 years 900 hrs
Championships - British Junior Nats - 1st twice, Club CLass Nats 2nd twice. Junior
European Club Class 9th, Junior Worlds Club Class 6th.
Finds that gliding is a challenge - racing against others and making the most out of
each day are what gives it such variety. There are no other sports where you can race
around such big tasks without an engine at such high speeds. Gliding is a beautiful
thing!
He likes the friendliness in gliding - some of his best friends are people whom he
competes against in competition.
Doesn’t like the average age of pilots, and how it appear to non-glider pilots - gliding
needs more young pilots!
Afandi Darlington

3rd place in the 2000 Club Class National Championship.
Afandi is fascinated by all things that fly and finds that competition soaring provides him with an addictive
mix of excitement, challenge and teamwork.
A particular strength is speed flying in good weather conditions.
